Skalitzer Strasse 134A, 10999 Berlin-Kreuzberg

By mixing his own compositions with various live-recorded sounds at Kottbusser Tor, the composer and percussionist Eli Keszler transports the reality behind and underneath that of which is captivating our sight on towards the rooftop of a carpark. The site-specific sound performance addresses our auditory and visual perception of social and architectural reality. Located behind the Zentrum Kreuzberg, formerly named Neues Kreuzberger Zentrum and built between 1969 and 1974, the carpark embodies the same architectural roughness as the Kottbusser Tor area, while still being a sort of elevated oasis, cut from view through the social housing complex. We can only guess about or reconfigure from our memory what is happening behind. What happens if our experience of this reality is changed by foregrounding its auditory component rather than its visual one? How is that further related to the human capacity of empathy, participation and care?

DISAPPEARING BERLIN is a program presented by Schinkel Pavillon and is genereoulsy supported by Hauptstadtkulturfonds and Spartenoffene Förderung of the City of Berlin.
