The Bierpinsel in Steglitz is one of Berlin’s most iconic landmarks. For the short period of two days and after eleven years of vacancy, DISAPPEARING BERLIN and Reference Festival will reopen the pop architecture tower for the Berlin people. During September 18th and 19th, a program of performances, concerts, a live radio show as well as video and sound installations, takes place on site to have visitors experience the building’s history and unique architecture again. Originally designed as a beer bar, restaurant and nightclub, the Berliners immediately nicknamed it “Bierpinsel” when it opened its doors in 1976. In 2020, the listed ensemble changed hands; its future use is still being defined. For years, buildings such as “Bierpinsel”, “Mäusebunker” or the ICC have been orphaned in Berlin’s urban space like leftover skeletons from bygone times. How is it that such building complexes, which were so visionary in the 1970s and dedicated to a utopian-technological future, stand empty for decades without substantial attempts to make them accessible to the public yet again? How can we, the inhabitants of this city, recapture these spaces?

DISAPPEARING BERLIN is a performance and music program produced by Schinkel Pavillon that explores the potentiality of a city in change. Some of Berlin’s iconic and disappearing architectures and spaces will temporarily transform through performative and sonic experiences. After more than a year of repetitive lock-downs and isolation, the program will celebrate the moment of live encounters between performance, architecture, and audience. The city of Berlin will become a stage where the invited artists investigate urban transformation processes as well as the consequences of the pandemic that are already manifesting in our cityscapes.

We are incredibly thankful for the support of ANH HAUSBESITZ GmbH & Co. KG, Max Dudler, GPDS GERMAN PROTECT & DEFENSE SERVICE GmbH & Jörg Krüseke, and ImmoMa & Götz Fluck. DISAPPEARING BERLIN at Bierpinsel wouldn’t be possible without them.

DISAPPEARING BERLIN is a performance and music series, organized and produced by Schinkel Pavillon e.V.. It is funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation.
